E. R. Varney Dies Suddenly at Age of 67
Aided In Organization of Bank and Was Active in Politics
Edward R. Varney, 67, long time respected resident of this village and for many years a town and village official, died suddenly Saturday night at 11 in his home, 68 Hudson street. He was a justice of the peace of the town of Moreau.
Mr. Varney was born in the town of Queensbury, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Varney. He always lived in this vicinity with the exception of four years in Cayuga county.
He had poor health for three years folowing a shock. About a year ago he underwent an operation for gland trouble. During the past five weeks Mr. Varney had been confined to his home, but his condition was not considered serious. His death is attributed to heart disease.
Always a Republican, Mr. Varney occupied the offices of town clerk, village trustee and town justice of the peace. In the later office he served for fourteen years. When his first term of justice of the peace, four years, expired he was again re-elected. Following this his name did not appear on the ticket until 1919 when he was again elected justice of the peace. In 1923 he was again re-elected.
Mr. Varney was a staunch member of the Society of Friends and was affiliated with Senate lodge, F. and A. M. and the Commercial Travelers' association.
He was one of the organizers of the First National Bank in this village and at one time was a director.
Besides his wife, Mr. Varney is survived by one son, Benoni J. Varney of Glens Falls; two brothers, Jacob M. and Selleck J. Varney of this village, and one sister, Miss Augusta Varney of this village. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
