Selleck Varney, Ex-President Of Bank, Dies in Nursing Home
Selleck J. Varney, 20 Main Street, South Glens Falls, at one time president of the former South Glens Falls First National Bank, died Thursday afternoon at the Koch Nursing Home, Glen Street.
A well known businessman, Mr. Varney started a grocery and feed business in South Street in 1888 with his brother, the late Jacob M. Varney. Next he went into the confectionary business and later he became employed at the bank in South Glens Falls, rising to the position of president.
About 25 years ago, while a teller at the bank, Mr. Varney foiled an attempted hold-up. An armed robber approached his window and ordered him to hand over the money. Instead of complying, Mr. Varney ducked behind the window, ran into the rear of the building, seized a rifle and began firing through the partition. The would-be robber escaped without the loot.
Mr. Varney was a lifelong member of the Friends Church and a member of Senate Lodge, 456, F. and A.M. He recently received his 50-year Masonic medal.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence L. Varney; a niece, Miss Ruth Varney Hathaway, Lexington, Mass.; two nephews, Addison M. Varney and Benoni J. Varney, both of Glens Falls, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The body has been removed to the Reagan and Denny Funeral Home, 341 Glen Street, where friends may call Saturday from 7 to 9 P. M. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P. M.
