Warren County: Partial 1850 Census Transcription
From Scroll to Computer
Currently a project is being undertaken by the USGenWeb Archives group. Volunteers are being recruited to transcribe the entire US Census from script to digital format. Once completed, the project will allow anyone with internet access to search census records from home or office. The program will require years of work by dedicated volunteers.
Here in Warren County, Todd Easton transcribed many of the 1850 Census Enrollment documents in 1998. As each town (division) was completed, they were posted here.
The format for these web pages was created by volunteers from the Census Project. Their sensitivity to how family searchers work is evident in the code that they provide for each volunteer transcriber. Files are searchable, either by name or by page of the census. This makes easy the task of (1) finding your ancestor, and (2) associating him/her with others in his household, and nearby neighbors.
Please realize that enumeration was normally done verbally. When the enumerator recorded the information, spelling errors could occur. These transcriptions were done as the enumerator entered the names. Some names and letters are indistinguishable, so an asterisk (*) is used. It is sometimes very hard to determine the difference between capital J's & I's, or between small r's & v's. As with any source, it is best to look at the original record when possible.
